Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event occurred on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to replace his broken nose section
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the FIA
"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was raised in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred after that point"
