JP Morgan Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Headquarters Admission

The banking leader has notified employees moving into its state-of-the-art main office in New York that they must share their physical characteristics to gain entry the multi-billion building.

Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory

The investment bank had initially intended for the registration of physical identifiers at its recently opened skyscraper to be optional.

Nevertheless, employees of the US's largest bank who have commenced employment at the new headquarters since last month have obtained emails stating that biometric access was now "compulsory".

The Technology Behind Entry

This security method requires personnel to submit their hand geometry to gain access security gates in the main floor rather than scanning their ID badges.

Office Complex Information

The corporate tower, which apparently was built for $3 billion to construct, will in time act as a home for 10,000 staff members once it is fully occupied before year-end.

Protection Reasoning

The banking institution opted not to respond but it is assumed that the implementation of biological markers for entry is designed to make the premises better protected.

Exemption Provisions

There are exceptions for some employees who will retain the ability to use a badge for entry, although the criteria for who will use more standard badge entry remains unclear.

Supporting Mobile Applications

Complementing the implementation of biometric readers, the company has also released the "JPMC Work" smartphone application, which acts as a virtual ID and portal for worker amenities.

The platform permits staff to coordinate external entry, navigate building layouts of the premises and arrange in advance food from the premises' nineteen restaurant options.

Broader Safety Concerns

The implementation of enhanced security measures comes as US corporations, particularly those with major presence in the city, look to enhance safety following the shooting of the CEO of one of the biggest American insurance companies in summer.

Brian Thompson, the head of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Additional Office Considerations

It is unclear if the financial firm intends to implement biometric access for employees at its locations in other major financial centres, such as the British financial district.

Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends

The move comes during debate over the implementation of digital tools to monitor employees by their companies, including monitoring physical presence metrics.

Earlier this year, all the bank's employees on mixed remote-office plans were told they have to report to the physical location five days a week.

Leadership Viewpoint

The bank's chief executive, the prominent banker, has described the bank's recently opened skyscraper as a "tangible expression" of the organization.

The banker, one of the world's most powerful bankers, lately alerted that the probability of the financial markets experiencing a decline was significantly higher than many market participants anticipated.
