Nintendo and Illumination shared the initial complete preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Wednesday. It was showcased in a Nintendo-focused broadcast that focused exclusively on the upcoming animated film.
Following up on the successful 2023 release The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this new installment will send Mario to the distant reaches of the cosmos. In his journey, he meets a fresh princess character and a challenging new adversary in Bowser Jr., the offspring of the Koopa King.
Similar to the games from the Wii period that provide its foundation, Mario will depart from the well-known surroundings of the Mushroom Kingdom to explore outer space. Throughout his extensive trek, he will meet again some well-known personalities, for instance the Luma, a fan favorite from the previous film.
However, it seems Mario and his brother Luigi will face a fresh enemy in the form of Bowser's furious offspring, who apparently commands metallic abilities. Interestingly, the preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not only concentrated on Galaxy-inspired imagery; it also contains hints to further iconic releases like Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury.
The film will see the return of the primary vocal talent, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
Joining the cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Brie Larson, who will bring to life Rosalina, and Benny Safdie, set to embody Bowser Jr. This was confirmed by Chris Meledandri, the chief executive of Illumination.
Mario's latest cinematic adventure is set to release around the time of the four-decade milestone of the original Super Mario Bros. game. Apart from the cinematic release, 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for Mario and his friends.
Nintendo confirmed a trio of new releases officially announced for that year, featuring Mario Tennis Fever, a release on Switch 2 of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a new Yoshi platformer titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is planned for launch on April 3, 2026.
